What We Do

Rutland Vermont Landscaping Fence Company

Pratico’s Landscaping & Fence Co. has deep roots in Vermont

Originally founded in 1950 as Pratico’s Garden Centerby Myles Pratico Sr. in Hydeville. A former prisoner of war, Myles was captured by the Germans during World War II, but managed to escape and return home to Rutland. With a modest sum provided by the U.S. government to help veterans rebuild their lives, he chose to open a garden center—a decision that would grow into a lasting family legacy.

From the start, the business was a family effort. Landscaping jobs were handled after hours by Skip (Myles Jr.) and a small crew. At its peak, the business operated 17 greenhouses, growing flowers and vegetables for the community. But like many small businesses, it struggled during the oil crisis of the 1970s. The cost of heating the greenhouses became unsustainable, and eventually, the garden center was forced to close.

In 1977, the business reopened on Route 7 North behind Seward Family Restaurant, gradually expanding services. By 1983, fencing and hardscape installations were added, giving the company a new direction and fueling its growth.

Some key milestones in the company’s evolution:

  • 1983 – Fence and hardscape services officially incorporated, enhancing the company’s offerings
    • 2007 – Moved to its current location at 349 US Route 7
    • January 2014 – A devastating fire destroyed the historic 1885 red barn, but a new building was rebuilt in time for spring that same year

In 2022, Pratico’s entered a new era when longtime employee Constance (Connie) Cavanaugh and her husband Robert Cavanaugh purchased the business. Connie, who has been part of the team for 28 years, played a major role in the nursery’s success—working her way up from sales to shop manager for over 25 years. She’s passionate about every part of the business and remains dedicated to its continued growth.

Though Skip has officially passed the torch, he still plays an important role in the day-to-day operations, helping to ensure that Pratico’s continues to thrive for years to come.
